Why the Tower of London and Crown Jewels Should Be on Your London Itinerary

Dramatic, in-depth tales of the glorious history of the British Monarch are whispered in the halls of the Tower of London. A historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London, this iconic landmark has a rich history, dating back to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, and was previously operated as a royal residence, a prison and an execution site. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, attracting millions of visitors each year.

Despite its dark past, the Tower of London is a fascinating and educational attraction that is well worth a visit. Visitors can take a guided tour of the tower, which includes a visit to the Crown Jewels, the White Tower, and the Bloody Tower. The tours are led by knowledgeable guides who can provide insight into the tower’s history and its many famous residents.

In addition to the guided tours, the Tower of London also hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, including reenactments of historical events, exhibitions, and concerts. These events are a great way to experience the tower’s history in a fun and interactive way.

There are no time limits on visitors’ personal exploration of the Tower of London.

The Crown Jewels

A significant representation of the British Monarchy, The Crown Jewels have been kept on display at the Tower of London since 1661. The display seeks to illustrate how the royal regalia is utilized throughout the ritual and discuss the symbolism of each article. In total the collection houses 23,578 glimmering gemstones.

Along with the Imperial State Crown which was used recently in King Charles’s III coronation in 2023, the Sovereign’s Sceptre, and the renowned 105.6-carat Kohinoor diamond, you can also locate The Prince of Wales’s Investiture Coronet and the rod used in the 1969 investiture. The Tower of London and its people have protected royal treasures for more than 700 years.

Did you know? The Crown Jewels have survived many ordeals over the centuries, including the Great Fire of London of 1666, and the outrageous attempt of Captain Blood to steal the regalia in 1671.
