A Glimpse of History

Established over a century ago, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco holds a rich history intertwined with the legacy of its founder, Prince Albert I. A passionate oceanographer and renowned marine explorer, Prince Albert I sought to create a center dedicated to the study of marine life and the conservation of oceans. The museum’s construction commenced in 1889, perched on the dramatic “Rock of Monaco,” an ideal vantage point for observing the surrounding seas and marine life.

After its inauguration in 1910, the museum quickly garnered international acclaim, drawing scientists, researchers, and marine enthusiasts from all corners of the globe. Today, the Oceanographic Institute, in association with the museum, continues Prince Albert I’s legacy, actively engaging in marine research and conservation efforts.
